Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Margie’s Book Nook

By Terra Avilla

There is not a building nor a business more fitting or deserving to be on our beautiful little town’s Main Street than a mom-and-pop bookstore. But it’s not just any bookstore, it’s a Book Nook, which makes it quaint and personal. Of course, I could only be talking about Margie’s Book Nook.

Now, mom-and-pop shops would lose all their charm and be characterless without having the hearts of their owners embedded into them. David and Margie Teeter are two incredible saints that we have in our community.

I don’t think the public realizes how much they give to our community. They do so much more than offer books – and they have a vast selection of books, toys, and other gifts.

Whenever I go into their business to ask for an anything – the answer is always “Yes.”

“Can I have a donation for Holiday with a Hero?”

“Sure.”

“Can I have a donation for the Police Explorers?”

“Of Course.”

“Can I hang a poster for this community event in your window?”

“No Problem!”

“Can we sell tickets to (insert any community event here)?”

“We would love to.”

Their store is a treasure and the pulse of our uptown district. In a world where they find themselves competing against the internet, Margie’s Book Nook goes out of their way to provide excellent customer service. If they don’t have the book you want, they will get it for you at lightning speed.

When you think of Historic Uptown Susanville, you think of Margie’s… and when you think of Margie’s you think of the iconic woman who has served this community for decades.

She sits on the Lassen County School Board as well as many other community-based programs. Her son, David, seems to have more hours in the day than anyone I know. David who volunteers for every club and board and volunteer opportunity.

On weekends for Farmer’s Markets in uptown, more often than not, that is him you see acting as the crossing guard. He wants this community to thrive and he definitely puts in the work.

When he was my partner for Dancing for A Brand New Me, trying to work around his schedule was ridiculous. We literally had 5:00 and 6:00a.m. practices because his entire day was dedicated to serving this community and his family.

When we think of supporting our local businesses, the first business that always comes to mind is Margie’s. Not only do they offer great products, but they offer a pipeline of goodwill back into our community.

Without books where would we be? It would be a dull and sad place. Without the Teeters where would be? Susanville would be a dull and sad place.

I encourage you to visit their store. It captures the essence of our town. They even have giveaways of free books for children. They want you to read. They want to help this community.

They are definitely one of the reasons I love the place we live.
