Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Makenzie Davis Freedman

By Terra Avilla

For a very brief while, before I changed my major in college to Criminal Justice, I studied journalism. In a way it is very similar to police work, in that there is a lot of writing and asking questions.

Through my studies, I quickly learned that a good journalist gathers the facts and presents them in an honest and balanced manner. However, a great journalist also has to know how to talk to people, have an investigative mindset, persistence and be able to present the facts in an interesting manner to the reader.

Our very own Makenzie Davis Freedman is surely all of those things. We are very lucky to have her among us.

I met Makenzie, like how I meet most of my favorite people, through my work at the police department. She writes for lassennews.com and the monthly High Country Life magazine.

Makenzie was covering a public event, snapping beautiful pictures of our community. She asked me for a statement, and I while I spoke with her I instantly noticed her cool and calm demeanor, and how friendly she was.

Through the years our paths crossed many times, and I soon considered Makenzie my friend. Year after year, she was a huge supporter of our Holiday with A Hero Program, or any other event I was trying to promote.

As she began dating Will Freedman, the Lassen College Basketball Coach, the two of us had a new theme to bond over. Although Makenzie is much more sophisticated and lady-like watching her husband coach then I am, much to Frankie’s dismay.

Through college Christmas parties, LCC sporting events and through her work, Makenzie has been someone who I enjoy sharing these milestones with.

And speaking of milestones, our wonderful girl, was just married and she was every bit a beautiful bride.

Makenzie is funny and sweet, without being overbearing. As a topic of her some of her articles over the past years, I can honestly attest to the fact that I just sound more intelligent when Makenzie interviews me.

Maybe it’s the way she asks questions, or clarifies my jumble of words into coherent sentences that always make me sound smarter than I am.

Makenzie is wonderful at her job, helping highlight our wonderful community. Moreover, she is just wonderful in general. She is a great asset to our community and is one of the reasons I love the place we live. (PS. Congrats on your wedding!)
