Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Kopper Kettle

By Terra Avilla

Oh my sweet, sweet husband. You know what my husband loves? God, his family, baseball and eating at Kopper Kettle. No joke, when we first started dating, one of our very first dates was at ‘The Kopper’ as my husband so fondly calls it. Since that fateful date, anytime that my husband gets to pick where we eat, you guessed it, a date at the Kopper Kettle it is!

Now, like any small town business, the real magic is with the restaurant’s staff. Sweet Bing and her adorable little son, make you feel like you are eating at a true family restaurant, because at it’s very core, it truly is a family restaurant.

The last time my family ate dinner there, Bing, the owner, sat down with patrons for more than fifteen minutes, talking with them. Not because she has to, but because she obviously knows them and cares for them.

Just like she knows my daughters and automatically knows which table is Peach’s favorite… and Lord help us if someone is sitting at the table, which Peach now thinks is hers.

Another confession – going out to eat with my family usually somewhat resembles a circus within a hurricane.

At any given point I most likely have one of my daughters eating a packet of jelly, while the other is taking off their shoes. We are working on restaurant etiquette but in the meantime, our meals are full of laughter, love and really, really good waffle fries every time we eat at Kopper Kettle.

The staff always smiles and never appears annoyed as Pearl coos loudly through the restaurant. Instead they come over and coo right back at her.

Jackie, our all-time favorite server, always has so much patience with our girls. One time Peach ordered; a salad, waffles, some eggs, bacon, chocolate milk, a sandwich, absolutely no tomatoes… This went on for about three minutes. Jackie just stood there smiling, humoring Peach as she pretended to jot down her 347-item order.

Small town restaurants are so unique and wonderful. The normal status quo of patron and server no longer applies. You become friends. You look forward to their face just as much as you look forward to their milkshakes.

Kopper Kettle. The place where I take my family to celebrate birthdays, visit with my out of town family, or brunch after church. The place Frankie always picks for his choice on dinner dates, and the place that I can have a home cooked meal without having to do the dishes.

The essence of a small-town diner, where you get so much more than anything you could ever, ever order off of a menu.
