Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Community Fundraising and Grace Steward

By Terra Avilla

I know in the time of campaigning and ever-high-tension between political parties, sometimes it hard to remember the other important things we have going on inside our own community. And when we are all exhausted it’s very important to remember the great things we have going on in this community.

This week’s column doesn’t pinpoint one particular person or one particular event. In contrast, it is meant to highlight the totality of what our community does for one another. And this week’s focus is on how it came together for eleven-year-old Grace Steward.

Grace is a very adorable and vibrant eleven-year-old who recently (and unexpectedly) went into stage five renal failure. Grace is on daily dialysis and will need a kidney transplant.

Now, not that our community would not help an adult if they needed it but, if there is one thing I know about our community – is when a little kid is involved- we mobilize quickly and effectively.

Since Grace has been hospitalized our community has quickly banded together to make a great golfing fundraiser for Grace. So many businesses donated, like Morning Glory and IGA. (This doesn’t even touch the other businesses that donated to the raffle.)

Numerous people and churches donated on a food delivery chain for Grace’s mother, and let’s not forget the huge golf tournament which mobilized several groups and was planned in less than four weeks. The golf tournament sold out, and was a huge success. Pretty amazing, what our community does, when we are dedicated to helping one of our families.

This sort of charitable attitude and spirit is a true testament to our community. We truly take care of one another here, and I just don’t think you would see this sort of community response from any other community. It is something really special we have here.

If you would like to help Grace (and her family) with medical bills, a GoFund me account has been set up, click here to contribute.
