Why We Love This Place Wednesdays: Billy Hoffman

By Terra Avilla

Now more than ever it is truly important to be kind. Be thoughtful in what you say. Gentle with other people’s feeling. And try to put more goodness in the world everyday than there was before. As I write about this week’s feature, I cannot think of someone who fits this description or is more deserving of recognition than Billy Hoffman.

Now, on the slight chance you have never had the pleasure of meeting Billy, let me tell you – he is all of those things and more.

Even if you don’t know Billy, when I describe him, I guarantee that if you have lived in the City of Susanville for any amount of time, you will know who I am talking about by my description.

The ‘bearded redhead with the scruffy beard and million-dollar smile’ dude who works for the City of Susanville Public Works.

Billy is always smiling, which stands out more than the neon green or yellow vests that he wears at work. In the past seven years that I have known Billy, he has also been so kind and genuine.

Billy is always one to offer his assistance and on all the details we have worked together, like road closures, parades etc., he has always been so fun and upbeat to work with.

I think the thing that makes me adore him the most is how much of a family man he is. Billy the proud ‘girl dad.’

Billy dotes on his wife and his daughters with love that is unrivaled. He signed his daughters up for the Police Department’s leadership camp and was excited to hear about their adventures. I really wanted to tell him that he was already doing a great job on raising leaders and could probably run a camp on his own.

This year he is taking a big step out of his comfort zone and has volunteered his time and talent to be a star in Lassen Family Services’ Dancing for a Brand New Me fundraiser where he will perform in front of a live audience.

Billy stated, “I’m terrified,” but then said that he is excited to be doing something so positive in our community.

And let’s be real, nothing could be more endearing and win the heart of the audience more than someone who is completely out of their comfort zone trying to do something positive.

I cannot wait to see him this fall in his performance, I know he will win the crowd over.

Billy is truly a piece of Susanville gold, a human that should be looked up to and cherished. He is incredibly humble, so I hope when you read this, you send him a text telling him what a treasure he is, so he can turn a very vibrant shade of red.

The fact is, people like Billy are truly what gives me hope for our future and will be what I am focusing on, as he is one of the reasons I love the place we live.
