The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office just announced that the evacuation order for Spalding has been lifted. As of 2:00 pm today, Sunday August 5, residents are allowed to return to their homes.
Only residents will be allowed in, and they must show proof of residency.
The A1 Road is closed through the fire area, so access to Spalding is from 139 to Eagle Lake Road.
Road closures along the A1 have been relocated. The south closure is near the entrance to Eagle Lake Marina, and the north closure is at the intersection of A1 and Spalding Way. Eagle’s Nest residents may access their cabins via road 231.
The Forest Service recreation facilities along the south shore of Eagle Lake are still closed.
The Lassen National Forest and BLM Public Lands are still closed in the vicinity of the Whaleback Fire for public safety. Fire damaged trees are being cut down near roads and populated areas, but will be a hazard in the interior of the fire area for a long time.
Public lands have been temporarily closed in the fire area to provide for public safety. Power will be restored as soon as possible. Lassen Municipal Utility District has provided the following guidance for the safe restoration of electricity:
• LMUD will announce via news outlets, Facebook, text alert, and the LMUD Outage Center on www.lmud.org when the power restoration process begins.
• Once the process begins it will take 6 – 8 hours to restore power to all customers. Power will be restored in small sections to reduce strain on the generator.
• Disconnect any personal generators not equipped with a transfer switch. Be prepared to operate any manual transfer switches once power is restored.
• Please conserve energy. Turn off unnecessary lights, large appliances, and air conditioners during the power restoration process.
• Once power is restored, continue to conserve energy. If you observe any hazardous conditions, notify LMUD immediately by calling 530-257-4174
Residents should avoid entering the burned area as hazards such as fire weakened trees, snags, stump holes, and blowing ash may remain. There may be heat and smoke in the burn area until it rains this fall.
