Lassen High athletes have been unable to play their chosen sports for nearly ten months now because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and now students are lobbying the California Interscholastic Federation who will be meeting next Tuesday to consider the issue.
On Friday LHS students will be joining with other planned rallies across the state, hoping to raise awareness and to encourage state health officials to let high school and youth sports return.
The CDPH is expected to update its guidelines in the next two weeks.
Lassen High student Autry Satica produced a heart-felt and emotional video featuring student athletes pleading their case to the CIF and the CDPH.
“Lassen High School Senior athletes have been looking forward to the 2020-2021 sports seasons for many years,” said Satica in a social media post Thursday.
“High School is supposed to be a time you enjoy, but considering how many activities and events have already been taken from us this year one of the only things we still can put our hope in is sports.”
Students in the video expressed the many reasons they feel sports should be allowed to resume across the state.
“Cancelling our senior season will take a physical, emotional and social toll on all our lives”
“Not letting us play is slowly making many of us lose our drive to be successful not only in sports, but in our studies.
“Not having sports is and will continue to take a toll on our school’s energy. Without hype, pep rallies and the gameday feel the school, the students, community and athletes have hardly anything to look forward to.”
The students have planned a ‘non-school organized Let Us Play Day!’ on Friday, at 4:00p.m. in Memorial Park. The event is open to the community and anyone that would like to support or be a part of the effort is invited to come.
