USFS Plans for Forest’s Future

The Eagle Lake District of the Lassen National Forest is commencing intensive planning for the South Campbell Management area west of Susanville on Highway 44.

According to the U.S. Forest Service one of the primary objectives of the proposed project is restoration of eastside pine, meadow and mixed conifer ecosystems.

Historically, eastside pine stands experienced a fire regime of frequent return intervals and low severity. Fire return intervals for forests similar to what occurs in the area were approximately 14 years.

Without fire in these ecosystems, tree densities and dead material on the forest floor have increased. Along with abundant fuel many meadow areas are experiencing tree encroachment. Through tree removal and prescribed fire actions the Forest Service hopes to restore healthy ecosystem conditions, enhance forest resilience to fire, disease and insect outbreaks, stimulate economic activity in the local timber-dependent communities, increase public and fire fighter safety and reduce hazardous fuels.

The agency is asking for local residents to join them for a discussion of this project. According to Team Leader Molly Simonson, “The knowledge of local residents, forest users and people interested in this area is of great value and can help us with project design and analysis.”

A field trip is scheduled to visit the South Campbell Management Area to observe and discuss forest and meadow ecosystem conditions, visit areas of the forest that have been previously treated and discuss proposed treatments in the project.

The excursion is scheduled for Thursday, August 11th, from 9:00a.m. to 3:00p.m, at the Eagle Lake Ranger Station, 477-050 Eagle Lake Road. The Forest Service suggests you dress for the weather, bring lunch and water and wear shoes appropriate for walking on uneven ground. Please RSVP for the field trip at 257-4188 and be sure to leave your contact information in case the Forest Service needs to reach you.

For further information about the proposed project, please contact Team Leader Molly Simonson at 257-4188.
