The Good Stuff by Shelley Bennett

Jacob Bennett signs letter of intent surrounded by his family

Last week my husband and I experienced some of the greatest good stuff: sending our first born off to college. Our son Jacob recently signed a letter of intent to continue his education and play baseball at Centenary College of Louisiana in Shreveport.

And while our hearts are filled with pride, there is a little ache in there too. There might be a picture of parents outside dorm rooms under the definition of the word “bittersweet.” But, like Leo said, this is what we always wanted, to see our kids chase their dreams and be happy. I just didn’t expect it to happen so soon.

One of the best moments of the evening was when I looked around and realized that almost every baseball coach that Jacob has had was in attendance. From T-Ball with Rick Wagner to LCC coach Frank Avilla. When I made the comment to Jacob that this spoke highly of his character and drive for the game, he also mentioned it might be because I am bossy.

While Leo and Landon traveled to the south to drop off Jake, Sofia and I stayed home for Drill Team camp. Spending the next three days with 20 dancers was definitely the distraction I needed.

Lassen High’s drill team hosted a United Spirit Association Dance Camp July 29th and 30th. Our instructor, Hank, traveled from southern California to teach the team four dances, military and jazz dance technique, drill down, and our dancers exceeded all expectations.

The Grizzliettes earned a superior rating for their performances in military, hip hop, and kick. Some dancers were awarded All-American ribbons for their outstanding technique and showmanship, including Renee Delgado, Liv Ormachea, Raina Stump, and captain Izzy Norwood.

Morgan Merrill was recognized for her work ethic and positivity with a Teamwork award.

During the final drill down, Renee Delgado (1st), Aubrey Yerington (2nd), and Emily Murchison (3rd) won ribbons for their efforts.

Instructor Hank praised the team for getting out of their comfort zone and really “going for it” in a lyrical piece he choreographed to challenge them. He also led the group in some fun games that resulted in lots of laughing and bonds being built.

As a coach, I can tell a lot about the upcoming year by the time had at camp. I am happy to say that this year looks to be one filled with great performances, challenging ourselves, and most importantly becoming like a family.

Please join us on August 27th under the Friday Night Lights when Lassen Football takes on the Pleasant Valley Vikings.

Grizzliettes are proud to earn superior rating

Remember when news was ‘newsy’? When you read about weddings, family events and engagement announcements in the newspaper? If you have something that might be newsworthy, please submit it to [email protected] and I’ll do my best to include it here in “The Good Stuff.”
