The Susanville Symphony Society will be kicking off their 2018-2019 performance season with a special concert on the lawn this Saturday, September 22nd, at the historic courthouse on Lassen Street.
The 4th annual Concert on the Green, which begins at 5:00p.m., features an exciting musical line up – from rock music played on symphony instruments to well known classical selections.
“There is a crisp cool in the air when you wake up in the mornings but the days are still sunny and warm,” says Symphony Artistic Director Ben Wade. “Growing up this meant that UT Football was in full swing, but nowadays it makes me think that the Symphony is getting ready to crank up their 16th season.”
The weather is typically perfect for the concert and Wade describes it as ‘truly magical’ as the sun sets halfway through the performance.
“This year there will be many exciting new performance highlights. Local musicians Jeremy Couso and Dennis Roberts will team up on Billy Joel’s smash hit Piano Man. Chicago’s 25 or 6 to 4, Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal featuring local standout brass group Uptown Brass and much more.”
Classical selections include Sibelius’ Finlandia and Puchini’s Nessun Dorma.
World famous Swedish Jazz Musician Gulhild Carling will perform with the Symphony. Carling is a Swedish Jazz musician and multi-instrumentalist famous for playing three trumpets at the same time. She plays trombone, bagpipes, trumpet, recorder and harp and will often showcase all of her skills in one song, sometimes casually breaking into a tap dance or singing lyrics.
In 2013, she performed with her ‘Carling Big Band’ at the Royal Palace in Stockholm in the celebration of King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Ruby Jubilee. In 2016, Carling performed at King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 70th birthday celebration.
