Susanville’s Sunrise Rotarians installed a new electrical system and much needed upgrades to the Standish 4-H building recently, with a matching grant from Rotary District 5190. The club put in a new electrical box, new LED lighting, new electrical outlets, fans to circulate air, heaters in the bathrooms and sensor security lighting at the entrances.

According to Sunrise Rotary President Zeane Barber, it was Rotarian Bill Payer who identified the need for the service project at the 4-H building, and the project was brought to the board by Rotarian Nancy Cameron.

The building, which serves all the 4-H clubs in the county as a club meeting facility and project work place, is more than 40-years old and the electrical box was the “buss” fuse type. The electric system was outdated and unsafe, the building was dark and uncomfortable – all of which made it difficult for the 4-H clubs to fulfill their purpose of empowering young people to be leaders.

The plan was accepted by the club to be the focus service project for the 2020-21 Rotary year.

Standish 4-H director Virginia Bartholomew expressed in one-word of awe, “Wow!” her amazement at the change to the club house and its new look. “Now we can see what we are doing!”

Sunrise Rotarian Gary Felt and his wife Susan took the lead on the project and more than a dozen Sunrise Rotarians provided labor for the project, while the whole club participated in raising funds to sponsor the renovations.

Barber thanked her club for living the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” and the community for supporting the organization’s fundraising efforts each year.
