Susanville Man Arrested After New K-9 Unit ‘Zeke’ Finds Controlled Substances in Vehicle

Officer Hoover and Susanville new K-9 Officer ‘Zeke’

The Susanville Police Department’s new K-9 Officer is only in his second week on patrol around town but he is already proving to be an effective crime-fighting addition to the police force.

Sunday morning at around 9:30, officers from the Susanville Police Department conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Alexander Avenue and Riverside Drive on a vehicle with expired registration.

“During the vehicle stop,” explains Chief Kevin Jones, “SPD’s K-9 Zeke was present and conducted an exterior sniff of the vehicle. Zeke showed a positive alert on the vehicle, meaning he alerted to some type of narcotic.”

According to Chief Jones a search of the vehicle revealed methamphetamine and paraphernalia consistent with use of controlled substances.

“Further investigation revealed the driver was in possession of narcotics, along with credit and bank cards of individuals who were not in the vehicle and whom he did not know.”

The driver, identified by the SPD as 22-year old Susanville resident Raymond Johnson was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and investigation of possession of stolen property.

The investigation into his possession of the different cards will be ongoing.

“This is Zeke’s second week on patrol and his first, of many to come, impacts on the criminal element in our community. Great job to both Officers Avilla, Hoover and Zeke.”
