The Walker Fire, which started Wednesday near Taylorsville, is only 5% contained and grew on an eastern flank near the town of Milford yesterday prompting Lassen County Sheriff Dean Growdon to put Mandatory Evacuations into place for the community late Saturday night.

According to Sheriff Growdon the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office received information from the Walker Fire Incident Command Team related to fire activity.

“The fire had crossed into the area that required evacuations in Lassen County,” explains Growdon. “Based on the fire activity, high winds, and assessment at the head of the fire, the decision was made to evacuate the town of Milford.”

The boundaries of the mandatory evacuation area are the intersection of Hwy 395 and Thunder Mountain Road north of Milford, to the intersection of Hwy 395 and Laufman Grade south of Milford. The evacuation order for this area is still in place. Roads in the evacuation area are closed to traffic and deputies and CHP officers will be patrolling the area.

“The protection of the properties within the evacuation area is a priority, and anyone committing crimes within the evacuation area will be arrested and prosecuted.”

The evacuation shelter at Jensen Hall at the Lassen County Fairgrounds is currently open.

“We will continue to work with the Incident Command Team in evaluating the need for the current evacuation order and the potential need for additional orders. We will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available,” said Growdon.

“We would like to thank the community for their cooperation and support, as well as all of the fire and law enforcement personnel who are working to protect our communities.”

An evacuation Center is open at the Lassen County Fairgrounds.
