Sheriff’s Office Update: Missing Family Found Safe at Crater Lake

Sheriff’s Deputies using OHV’s searched the area around Crater Lake for the missing family

A man and his two small children were found safe Wednesday after a multi-agency search team located their vehicle stuck in snow at Crater Lake near Highway 44 in western Lassen County.

After the initial call came in a California Highway Patrol Officer and a US Forest Service Officer began searching for the family in the area. Those officers then requested assistance from the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office.

“Five Sheriff’s Office personnel responded with Off Highway Vehicle equipment,” explains LCSO Lieutenant Dave Woginrich. “SEMSA Air Operations was contacted and they immediately agreed to fly to the Crater Lake area to assist in the search.”

Within approximately 40-minutes a SEMSA helicopter located the family and provided direction for the ground search team. At around 6:00p.m., the ground search team reached the family and provided them transportation back to safety.

Lieutenant Woginrich thanked SEMSA Air Operations, the California Highway Patrol, US Forest Service and Cal-OES for their assistance.
