Robert Neil Johnson was born in Los Angeles, California on August 14, 1934 to Cyril and Virginia Johnson. His family moved to Susanville early in his life and he graduated as class valedictorian from Lassen High School in 1952. He continued his education and graduated from Lassen Junior College with an Associate of Arts degree, UCBerkeley with a Bachelor’s of Arts and Master’s of Arts Degree in History in 1958. During his academic years he received numerous awards, was a member of the debate team and student body secretary/treasurer.

He met Carol Ann Chandler in 1957 and they married in 1958 in San Francisco. He served in the army where he was stationed in Hawaii. Bob and Carol had three children: Chris, Cheryl and Denise.

The young family returned to Susanville in 1969. Bob partnered with his father, Cy, and created the business CyJohnson and Son. Bob wrote numerous books and created maps outlining the best places to find rocks, minerals and ghost towns. The books continue to be used by rock hounds today.

Bob was a lover of the outdoors, avid bird watcher and hiker. He coordinated the annual Christmas bird count for a number of years and was President of the local Audubon Society in Lassen County. He could determine what t ype of bird he heard by the bird’s call. He was a member of the Haiku Society of America and had numerous poems published throughout the years by the organization. Additional hobbies included stamp collecting, jewelry making and photography.

He is survived by his wife, Carol; three children, Chris Johnson, Cheryl Timmons {Patrick}, and Denise Tedeschi {Mike}; grand children, Corrinne Carrabello {Justin} and Caitlin Timmons; great grand children, Anthony Carrabello, Christian Carrabello and Sofia Carrabello . He was a wonderful father, grandfather and husband and will be sorely missed.

His service will be held at Diamond Crest Cemetery on Friday, Dec. 13 at 1:00 p.m.
