Presentation Day for Lassen County 4-H Members

By Sandy Fortin
Richmond 4H Club Leader

While most people agree that knowledge is a powerful tool, the ability to speak well and pass one’s knowledge on to others is equally as powerful.

Public speaking has been a cornerstone of the 4-H Youth Development Program since the early 20th century.

On March 10th the 4-H members throughout Lassen County put their skills to the test at the Lassen County Presentation Day.

Junior members competing were Parker Somerville, “Beef Identification”, Jack Mallery, “Tricks to Trap”, Elena German, “Shine On”, Bailey Lawton,”10 Minutes to F-ABBLE-lous Manners”, and Wes Langston and Brand Satica, “Eggcetera Etc.”.

The Intermediate members that competed were Nathan Egan, “Genetics: Polled, the right way to go”, Raquel Williams, “Blue Star Moms”, Jared Lile, “Starting Your Bird Dog” & J.D. Simpson, “Pork on a Bun”. In the senior division, Ashley Gorbet presented “What’s on Your Plate?”

Presentation competitions take place at the county level with those winning gold awards advancing to sectional and then state levels. The sectional contest will be hosted by Modoc County 4-H and held in Alturas this year. The state contest will be held at the 4-H State Field Day held at UC Davis, Memorial Day weekend.

The Lassen County Cattlewomen sponsor awards for the top presentations relating to the beef industry. Junior Parker Somerville, Intermediate Nathan Egan and Senior Ashley Gorbet will be sharing their presentations at the next cattlewomen’s meeting.

The Lassen County Rotary has sponsored a revolving plaque and the Lassen 4-H Council donates a $50.00 cash award for the outstanding overall Presentation. Jared Lile from Richmond 4-H captured this award with his Power Point entitled, “Starting Your Bird Dog”.

The Lassen County 4-H members would like to thank Richmond 4-H for hosting the day and community members that helped make it a success by donating their time to judge this event. If anyone would like more information about 4-H, please contact Darcy Hanson at (530) 251-8285.
