People at Eagle Lake and in the Grasshopper Valley are seeing smoke this afternoon as crews from the Bureau of Land Management conduct a prescribed understory burn in the Cleghorn Reservoir Area.
According to BLM Public Affairs Officer Jeff Fontana fire managers report that all is going well on the project designed to reduce hazardous fuels that could feed a wildfire, and to improve rangeland and forest health.
The crew hopes to complete up to 130 acres of burning today, and will continue to patrol the burn area in the coming days.
“A similar successful burn last week resulted in 130 acres treated,” explains Fontana. “Understory burns are low intensity, carefully managed fires, ignited only when weather conditions and fuel moisture allow for safe and successful burning.”
