The Plumas Audubon Society will hold their 2nd Annual Grebe Festival at Lake Almanor August 18th and 20th and along with drawing many tourists to the region the society seeks to engage community youth with the Grebe Festival Art Contest for K-12 students in Plumas, Lassen, and Sierra Counties.

According to Grebe Festival Coordinator Sophie Kissin, last year’s art contest garnered more than 200 submissions and festival-goers loved to see fantastic artwork from local kids on display.

Students grades K-12 in public, private, and home schools are invited to submit original artwork focused on grebes or other birds of Lake Almanor in drawing, painting, photography, collage, and poetry media.

Information about Western and Clark’s Grebes, their habitats, behavior, and conservation, as well as a list of other birds of Lake Almanor are available for inspiration and reference on the Plumas Audubon website.

Prizes for thoughtful and well-crafted artwork will be awarded to the top three submissions in each age group. Four age groups, K-3; 4-6; 7-8; 9-12, will be judged.

The 2017 Grebe Festival Art Contest is open now through June 30th. Winners will be announced by the end of July. Winners and participants will be honored and awarded their prizes at an award ceremony and ice cream social on Sunday, August 20th at the Almanor Rec Center.

All original artwork submitted to the contest will be exhibited during the Grebe Festival at festival headquarters in the Almanor Recreation Center. Young artists can take their work home after the award ceremony.

Please ensure that all submissions include the artist’s name, age, and contact information. Submissions with incomplete information will not be considered.
