Once again Lassen Senior Services big, annual fundraiser, the Lassen County Barbecue Cook-Off was a huge success with teams of cooks traveling from all over the west coast to take part in the two- day event, which is officially sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
27 teams from as far away as Roseburg Oregon, Nevada, the Bay Area, San Diego, Sacramento, Redding and Los Angeles competed in four categories trying to win $10,000 in prize money.
Peoples Choice, voted on by attendees who got a chance to sample bbq from each People’s Choice entrant, went to Joe Comino from JC’s Smokin’ Hot Grill.
The Lassen County Pitmaster award went to Jamie Welch of Sierra Smoke Pit BBQ.
In the Master Series the Grand Champion was Cynical BBQ and the Reserve Champion was Smokey Hog Island Luv.
Judges for the event were given special training to learn just what to look for, and how each cut of meat should taste.
“Many volunteers, including the Miss Lassen County Court, made this possible,” said Lassen Senior Services Executive Director Penny Artz. “The Board of Lassen Senior Services volunteered hours to the success of the event.”
Along with the tasty barbecue visitors to the fairgrounds were treated to live music from Jackie Lee and the Coyotes and a classic car show organized by Bob Rashien.
Artz thanked a list of generous local sponsors who made the day a success; Plumas Bank; Kid’s Que sponsor Sierra Desert Properties; Susanville Motors; Axia Home Loans; Diamond Mountain Casino and PHI Air Medical.
She also thanked Cecil and The Rental Guys and C & S Waste.
“And we cannot thank Jim Wolcott and his staff enough for presenting Lassen County with a great venue,” Artz said.
“All of our prize money was paid through team entry fees and the teams are so thrilled with the fairgrounds location that all of them have committed to next year.”
