An early Saturday morning burglary at the Verizon store on Susanville’s Main Street led to a high-speed vehicle chase and the arrest of a 27-year old, according to details released today by the Susanville Police Department and the Susanville Office of the California Highway Patrol.
According to Susanville Police Sergeant Jeff Hopkins, police responded to a burglary in progress at 800 Main Street at around 5:00a.m., and discovered a previously boarded-up back door of the business had been torn out.
“Officers entered the business to locate subjects inside and potential evidence,” explained Hopkins. “No subjects were located inside the store.”
Police were able to make contact with a store employee who identified items that were taken from the business.
Around 45-minutes later a CHP unit attempted to stop a 2002 Ford F-350 that was being driven westbound on Richmond Road, near Pearl Circle.
The driver of that vehicle, identified by authorities as Richard Anthony Lenning, fled in a reckless manner, leading CHP on a chase through town and westbound on Highway 36. There was also an unknown subject riding in the passenger seat of the vehicle.
According to the CHP report, Lenning intentionally drove the vehicle off the highway west of County Road A1 and fled on foot, along with his passenger, before being apprehended by CHP officers.
A search of the area was conducted, but the passenger was not located, apprehended or identified.
Susanville Police responded to the location of CHP arrest and were able to identify property stolen from the Verizon store.
The case has been referred to the Lassen County District Attorney’s Office for the prosecution of further charges including burglary, possession of burglary tools and possession of stolen property.
The burglary and pursuit involved the Susanville Police Department, the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and the California Highway Patrol.
