NWS Weather Bulletin: Several Days of Dangerous Scorching Heat in the Forecast

The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Heat Advisory for our area, in effect from 11:00a.m., today until 8:00p.m., Sunday.

The Honey Lake Valley is expected to see several consecutive days of high temperatures near or above 100 degrees.

Record high temperatures are likely, with potential for a new record for the latest 100 degree high at Reno.

Along with our valley the Heat Advisory is in place for western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake, Northern Washoe County, Surprise Valley California, eastern Plumas-eastern Sierra Counties, Greater Reno, Carson City, Minden Area and Mineral and Southern Lyon Counties.

Hot temperatures could result in heat health impacts, especially for vulnerable populations and for those outdoors in the sun for extended periods of time.

Since this is a holiday weekend, many people will be outdoors recreating and that could increase risk of heat illness incidents. Smoke could also exacerbate the heat health impacts as it may prevent those without air conditioning from cooling their homes overnight.

Temperatures are expected to fall into the 60s and 70s between 9:00p.m., and midnight before falling into the 50s to mid 60s by daybreak. This should help ease heat health impacts.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Consider indoor or morning “Plan B” alternative activities this coming weekend. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
