NWS Weather Bulletin: Heavy Snow and Strong Winds This Afternoon and Sunday

The National Weather Service’s office in Reno is warning residents in our area to expect heavy snow coupled with strong south-southwest winds beginning this afternoon. A brief break develops Sunday morning, then moderate to heavy snow returns for Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning.

Snowfall here in the Honey Lake Valley will be from 2 to 4 inches over the course of the weekend with up to 36 inches forecast for mountain passes. Valley winds will gust to 50 mph, ridges to 115 mph.

The Winter Weather Advisory begins at 1:00 this afternoon and ends at 4:00 Monday morning.

Experts at the NWS say that travel will be very difficult this afternoon into early Sunday and again Sunday afternoon into early Monday morning over Sierra passes including Donner I-80, Echo US-50, Yuba CA-49, and Fredonyer CA-36. Plan double or more the typical travel times.

Strong winds could cause low visibilities and power interruptions at times.

Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely with visibilities below one-half mile at times.

Avoid travel over the Sierra this afternoon and evening if possible, you could be stuck in your vehicle for many hours. If you must travel, prepare for long delays and carry an emergency kit with extra food, water and clothing. If you stay home, have a backup plan in case of power outages.

The latest road conditions can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.
