NWS Bulletin: Heavy Snow and Strong Damaging Winds Possible Thursday

The National Weather Service office in Reno has issued an urgent weather bulletin warning residents in our area to prepare for heavy snow and strong damaging winds Thursday and Friday.

The bulletin will be in effect for Lassen County along with eastern Plumas county, eastern Sierra County and the greater Lake Tahoe area from Thursday afternoon through Friday afternoon.

Forecasters expect heavy snow and strong, damaging winds to be possible. Damage to trees and power lines is possible as well. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are possible between 4,500 and 5,500 feet, with 6 to 12 inches between 5,500 and 6,500 feet, and 1 to 2 feet above 6,500 feet.

Significant reductions in visibility are possible in areas of heavy snow and blowing snow. Power outages will be possible, especially Thursday in the Sierra Valley and along Highway 395 between Susanville and the Nevada State Line. Sierra ridges gusts expected to exceed 100 mph.

The weather office folks say that now is the time to prepare an emergency kit for your home and car. If traveling consider alternate plans, remember to carry tire chains, extra food, water and clothing. Once the storm arrives, travel may be difficult or impossible for an extended period of time.
