No Charges Filed in Wildwood Way Shooting Death

Dareck Bloem, the 23 year-old Susanville man who was jailed after a deadly shooting Saturday morning, was released from custody Tuesday, and Lassen County’s District Attorney Bob Burns has announced that at this time no charges will be filed.

Burns explained, in a statement dated Tuesday, that he is, “not convinced at this time by the facts and evidence that a crime was committed and I have authorized the release from custody of the suspect today without the filing of charges. The matter continues to be investigated by the Susanville Police Department.”

Bloem was originally arrested for the death of Jason Theodore Hamel at a home in the 500 block of Wildwood Way. According to the District Attorney and police reports the incident occurred following an incident at the Diamond Mountain Casino which Burns characterized as a, “verbal altercation.”

“Some hours later,” the report continues, “in the early morning of Saturday May 5, 2012, the decedent came to suspect’s home. The suspect, his wife, their six month old child and the suspect’s father were at home, not bothering anyone.”

According to law enforcement interviews, when Hamel came to suspect’s home he announced his presence and the Bloem answered the door. After the door was opened, a struggle ensued in the entryway. Bloem reported that Hamel grabbed his throat and began choking him. During the struggle Bloem, who had armed himself prior to answering the door allegedly fired at least one shot, striking and killing Hamel.

The Susanville Police Department, responding to a report of shots fired, arrived shortly after and found Hamel unresponsive in front of the home.

The statement from the District Attorney’s office also pointed out that Bloem has no criminal history and recently returned from serving a tour of duty as a member of the U.S. military in Afghanistan.

Hamel however, according to Burns, “has a criminal history which includes two separate convictions stemming from two separate events on two separate victims out of Nevada for Battery with Serious Bodily Injury. The decedent appears to have served at least one term in Nevada State Prison”

“Moreover,” the report continues, “this District Attorney’s Office is in possession of a Susanville Police Department report from 2010 wherein decedent caused a disturbance which resulted in a physical altercation in someone else’s home. He was just a momentary guest in that home at the time.”

“Witnesses report that the decedent, shortly before he left to go to the suspect’s home, made a statement which could only be characterized as a threat towards the suspect.”

Bloem’s attorney, Stephen King, issued a statement on the behalf of Bloem thanking the Susanville Police Department for their thorough investigation.

“On behalf of Mr. Bloem,” the release reads, “he is very grateful that no harm came to his family during the incident but regrets that this senseless tragedy occurred and that a life was lost.”
