On Thursday the Monticola Club of Susanville presented a gift card to the Honey Lake Valley Recreational Authority’s community pool to purchase a suitable tree to add to the landscaping of the pool surroundings.

The donation of the tree is in memory of beloved Monticola members who have passed away.

In 2019 the club also donated an umbrella table to the pool.

Monticola Club is a women’s community organization that has been dedicated to improving our community since it’s founding in 1912 by fifteen dedicated women.

“This is not the first time that Monticola women have stepped up to help with a community swimming pool,” explains club president Naomi Turner. “In 1919, the club pledged $25 to help maintain the ‘swimming pool’ and bathhouses that were located in the Susan River near today’s Richmond Road bridge.”

In 1914 Monticola was instrumental in starting the first public library in Susanville. Over the years, Monticola has been involved in a number of beautification projects: Inspiration Point, the ‘Triangle’ at the west end of Main Street, planting lilacs around town, the sunburst locust trees in front of Lassen High School.

In 1947, Monticola together with other local organizations helped to purchase land and develop Memorial Park.

Monticola Club has supported youth and education in Lassen County in many ways the largest being in the form of scholarships awarded each year since 1959 at the high school to graduating seniors, and since 1979 at Lassen Community College.
