Montgomery Wins ‘Rookie of the Year’ in Spokane Trap Shooting Championship

Lassen High Junior Caleb Montgomery traveled to Spokane, Washington this summer to compete in one of the west coast’s premier trap shooting competitions, walking away with The Grand Pacific’s Rookie of the Year award.

The week-long Grand Pacific Championship features hundreds of talented shooters from all over the western United States and Canada competing in various events.

In the state finals held earlier this year Montgomery won the high overall average of three events to represent California at the Grand Pacific.

Montgomery started out the week by shooting a 99/100 in the first half of the 200-target singles event giving him a 2-target lead. He then shot a 95/100 on day-two but still managed to hold on to the 2-target lead going into the final day of competition.

In the final event, with winds blowing more than 20mph, and he ended his first round with only a 21/25. Montgomery fought off the bad round, wind and nerves to come back with a 24/25 in round two; a 25/25 for round three and a 24/25 for the fourth and final round, giving him an overall score of 94/100 in the Handicap event.

He managed to hold onto his 2-target lead, posting a 289/300 to win the Pacific International Trap Associations, 2019 National Rookie of the Year title.
