Students from McKinley Elementary spent a fun day learning about airplanes and helicopters at the Susanville Municipal Airport last week.

According to McKinley teacher Tarah Clark the kids spent about 15 minutes with each plane.

“Some they were able to go inside and sit in the cockpit,” said Clark. They got a chance to try on radio headphones, work the controls and learn how pilots navigate.

Students met the flight crew from PHI Medical and were shown around the inside of their bright yellow medical helicopter, learning about calling 911 in an emergency and how the aircraft is used to transport extremely sick or injured people.

The young aviation enthusiasts also learned about the fighter planes and helicopters used in the war, for both fighting and transportation of wounded soldiers, visiting the F4 Phantom and the Bell AH-1F static displays at the entrance to the airport.

While at the airport the students also got to see several aircraft land and take-off.
