Students Polled On War Savings
March 25th, 1945

At the request of the federal government the journalism class of Lassen Union high school last week took a poll of students who are buying war bonds and stamps, to discover the reasons for purchases and what the students plan to do with the money upon maturity of the bonds years from now.

The poll was conducted along the lines of those held by the famous Gallup foundation, part of a similar plan being operated throughout the United States. The results will be used buy the federal government to publicize sales in the future, and to help the nation’s businessmen in planning for the postwar period.

In the local area it was discovered that 53 percent of the students are planning to use the money for college or professional training. Twenty-nine percent plan to invest in a business venture. Travel will absorb 17 percent, while only two percent are saving towards marriage. 20 percent are interested in postwar automobiles and airplanes.

Four percent will buy clothes; 14 percent are interested in homes; 11 percent have some special hobby or vocation in mind and plan to divert at least some of their capital in that direction.

Twenty-one percent of the student body are interested in security and plan to continue to keep the money in savings if possible to be used as a cushion between themselves and a possible postwar depression. Some of the students, 21 percent, have not bought the bonds with anything but the present emergency in mind. They have no plans.

The poll was given as a surprise assignment to a sampling of representative students. Questions were asked of 100 students; none of them had time to plan ahead for their answers. They were chosen evenly, 50 boys and 50 girls. 25 from each of the four high school classes. Each student was given the opportunity of expressing more than once choice.
