Sixteen outstanding competitors, from four northern California counties, traveled to Susanville on April 23rd, to take part in a Job Interview Contest hosted by Lassen 4-H and created as part of an Emerald Star Project by Maddi Johnson and Lily Ammon. The interview contest coincided with the annual 4-H Presentation Day.
Competitors were required to do an interview in front of a panel of judges, who then scored the 4H’ers on various criteria. Top winners received cash prizes and will go on to the State level in July.
Why an Interview Contest? Johnson said they wanted to create something that would be valuable to the competitors down the road. Skills gained at this level will be useful to the 4H competitors when they apply for jobs. Simple concepts like ‘dress for success’ give contestants an advantage when applying for real jobs.
“You will get better if you practice,” explains Johnson who, along with Ammon, really hopes that contestants walk away with some valuable skills.
Johnson came up with the idea for the contest and said she asked Ammon to work with her because they work so well together, and she knew the two of them could accomplish something great.
The two of them had to plan, organize, host, and review the project to earn their Emerald Star status.
They created a contest manual, found local judges, wrote letters and organized the event.
