Lassen National Forest Prescribed Burn near Stirling City

Lassen National Forest fire managers are planning a prescribed fire project on the Almanor Ranger District. The Minnow Prescribed Burn Project is 300 acres and is located in northern Butte County, five miles north of Stirling City. If prescription parameters and staffing levels are met, this prescribed burn will begin on October 22nd.

Communities affected by the 2018 Camp Fire may notice smoke in the area from these operations. Forest personnel have been making contact with community officials in advance of this prescribed burn and will continue to maintain close communications throughout the burn.

The Minnow Prescribed Burn will reduce surface fuels and future wildfire severity in previously logged units, contributing to a network of fuels reduction units in the vicinity of Brown’s Ravine.

This network forms an infrastructure of thinned forest areas that can increase the likelihood of success during future suppression strategies while providing for firefighter and public safety.

The project is also designed to enhance fire-resilient species such as pine and oak, which will contribute to the resiliency of this forest system in future wildfire events. Prescribed fire will allow for fire to return to its role in an ecosystem that evolved with and is dependent on fire as a critical process.

“Due to smoke and the visual site of the column from adjacent communities affected by last year’s Camp Fire, an elevated public information campaign has been initiated. We will continually share information about this project until its completion. We will also provide similar information sharing opportunities about other fuel treatment projects on the Forest. ” said LNF Forest Supervisor Deb Bumpus.
