Lassen Historical Society Names 2020 Zellamae Miles Scholarship Recipients

The Lassen Historical Society has chosen three outstanding local high school graduates; Erin Nickell, Gabriela Neilsen and Miles Ormachea, to be the recipients of this year’s Zellamae Miles $1,000 scholarships.

Each year two $1,000 scholarships are offered by the organization to graduating seniors in Lassen County who plan to attend an accredited college or university. This year some generous, additional donations to the society’s scholarship fund allowed for a third student to receive an award.

Nickell plans on attending Grand Canyon University in Pheonix, Neilsen will attend Brigham Young University in Hawaii and Ormachea will go to school at Shasta College.

More than a dozen local graduates applied for the scholarship opportunities, each writing a short narrative on topic relating to Lassen County history.

“We feel that one of the most important ways we can help preserve our local history is to encourage young people to take an interest,” explains Historical Society President Jeremy Couso. “Through these scholarships we can help foster that interest and hopefully encourage the best and brightest local students to learn about our county’s past.”

The Lassen County Historical Society promotes interest, education and research into Lassen County’s past, present and future. It strives to collect and preserve records, data, pictures and material pertinent to the history of Lassen County. Anyone interested may become a member.
