Lassen County Public Health Reports First COVID-19 Related Death

Sad news this morning as Lassen County’s Public Health Department confirms our county’s first COVID-19 related death, saying that a person in their seventies who had tested positive for COVID-19 has passed away.

The brief statement gave no other details about the case out of concern for the patient’s privacy.

“Lassen County Public Health takes confidentiality very seriously and at this time we are not releasing any further information about the individual. Lassen County has a small population and it is our priority to maintain privacy and adhere to the Healthcare Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).”

“We extend our deepest condolences to their loved ones,” the Incident Commanders said in their announcement on Friday.

Local health officials explain that it continues to be critical that individuals and organizations take action to slow the spread of the virus by following all applicable guidance and recommendations from the Public Health Department, and carefully reviewing new recommendations and direction as it is issued.

“I’m very sad to announce that we’ve lost one of our community members to this illness. This news hits us hard,” stated Helen May, Lead Nurse at Lassen County Public Health.

“This COVID-19 pandemic is a historic public health challenge. Our top priority continues to be protecting the health of our community.”
