Lassen County Fire Safe Council to Offer Home Ignition Zone Workshop

If you are interested in how you can protect your home, family and animals from wildfire, sign up for the Home Ignition Zone Workshop hosted by Lassen Fire Safe Council on May 31st and June 1st.

Find out how the fuels around your home and buildings can be arranged, modified and designed to be attractive and resist ignition from even severe wildfires. It’s not a miracle or luck.

This workshop will discuss in detail; the reality and myths of wildfires, the science of how wildfires ignite structures, how wildland/urban disasters occur, the concept of the Home Ignition Zone and the pre-fire actions that departments and residents can take to prevent wildfires from destroying their homes and communities.

A wildfire home assessment field exercise will also be offered which will assist participants in identifying wildfire hazards in the HIZ and the actions required to mitigate these hazards and reduce the probability of structures igniting.

This information will benefit residents, fire and emergency services, city/county officials, insurance and real estate professionals and anyone concerned with reducing their exposure to wildfires.

This HIZ Workshop will be instructed by Pat Durland. Pat is a nationally respected and internationally known expert in wildland fire mitigation training and planning programs for agencies, communities and property loss professionals. As a 20-year resident of the fire-prone Boise foothills, Pat and his family have dealt with wildfire both personally and professionally.

The two-day Home Ignition Zone Workshop will be held at the Janesville Fire Station, located at 463-390 Main Street from 6:00p.m. until 9:30p.m. on Friday May 31st, and from 8:30a.m. until 4:30p.m. on June 1st. RSVP’s are requested as we will want a head count to provide food and beverages, for which LCFSC will be “passing the hat” for contributions.

Please RSVP by email, preferred, to [email protected] , or by phone: 530-251-5560.

This workshop is being funded through Title III funds made available to LCFSC from the Lassen County Board of Supervisors to support Lassen County’s 10 recognized Firewise Communities.
