Lassen College and Westwood High School have partnered with the Northern California Information Communication Technologies Hub at the Sacramento County Office of Education and other NorCal Community Colleges to form NorCal Cyber and support free, week-long Virtual Summer Introductory and Advanced Cybersecurity Camps for Middle School and High school students. The local Westwood Camp will be held June 15th through the 19th.
Camps are designed for 6th to 12th graders who have an interest in cybersecurity and technology. Students can sign up for Introductory or Advanced camps. Introductory sessions will guide students through a variety of cybersecurity topics, including managing one’s digital footprint, Linux, Python, networking, and Wireshark.
No experience in cybersecurity is required to sign-up for the Intro Camp, but it’s recommended as a prerequisite before the Advanced camp. Campers in the Advanced sessions will explore cryptography, digital forensics, web app exploitation and malware analysis.
Westwood faculty will facilitate the local camps. “This effort is a prime example of how our CA Community Colleges can partner and share successful programs throughout the State,” said ICT-DM Regional Director Wendy Porter.
Camps will expose students to critical cybersecurity skills for which there is an extremely high demand in the labor market.
“Moving our camps online due to COVID-19 has been a blessing for some of our more rural students, and in light of this, participation is expected to be high. It is exciting to be able to provide students with fun, free, and totally virtual camps in order to build their critical thinking, team, and technical skill sets.” said Porter.
