LAFCO Seeking to Fill Two Commission Positions

The Local Agency Formation Commission of Lassen County has expiring terms of office for its Public Member and Public Member Alternate, and Lassen County residents are invited to apply.

LAFCO is a distinct agency created by state legislation to ensure that changes in governmental organization occur in a manner, which provides efficient, quality services and preserves open space and agricultural land resources.

LAFCO is charged with applying the policies and provisions of the Cortese-Knox-Hertzberg Local Government Reorganization Act of 2000 in its decisions regarding annexations, incorporations, reorganizations and other changes of local government.

LAFCO’s webpage is located on the City of Susanville’s webpage which is: www.cityofsusanville.org

LAFCO normally meets on the second Monday of every other month at the Board of Supervisors chambers located in Susanville.

The appointment is for a public member and public member alternate who reside anywhere within Lassen County including the territory in the city limits of Susanville to

sit as a regular public member or as an alternate public member on the Commission. The terms expire in May 2016. A public member and alternate must be able and available to

regularly attend Commission meetings and (or) hearings or otherwise will be removed after absence of three consecutive meetings.

No officer or employee of the county or the city or district within Lassen County is allowed to sit as a public member or alternate on the Commission. LAFCO’s Public Commission member, as are all other Commissioners, is required to file an annual Statement of Economic Interest and must complete ethics training for public officials.

If you are interested, the commission invites you to send a letter describing your background and reasons for wanting to become the selected Public Member or Alternate to serve on the Lassen Local Agency Formation Commission no later than Friday March 30th, 2012.

If you have any questions call John Benoit, Executive Officer at (530) 257-0720 or email [email protected] Please send your letter of interest describing your background to LAFCO of Lassen County, P.O. Box 2694 Granite Bay, CA 95746 or email a letter of interest to [email protected].

Potential applicants will be invited to the April or May 2012 LAFCO meeting at 3:00 p.m. for an interview with the Commission at the Board of Supervisor’s Chambers, 707 Nevada Street in Susanville. Selection will take place following the interviews.

The Local Agency Formation Commission was created by the Legislature in 1963 to discourage urban sprawl and encourage the orderly formation and development of local government agencies. There is a LAFCO in each county in California.

Lassen LAFCO is comprised of two members appointed from the Lassen County Board of Supervisors, two members appointed from the City Council of Susanville, and one member appointed from the public-at-large. There is an alternate from each of the seated categories of members.
