Job Description:
Under the general supervision of the Direct Services Program Manager and Direct Services Program Supervisor, the primary function of the Lead Crisis Intervention Peer Counselor/Legal Advocate is to work with victims of crime in a Trauma Informed Care and advocacy based counseling model to provide legal information, assistance in navigating the civil and criminal justice systems, support in court, help in obtaining and completing restraining order paperwork, referrals to legal, community and other resources, safety planning, DV education, emotional support and case management services.  The Lead Crisis Intervention Peer Counselor/Legal Advocate is not a lawyer and does not give legal advice.  Further, this position provides daily crisis intervention, education, peer counseling, resource and referral and support services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.  Documentation of services will include developing case plans, completing progress notes and assisting the Direct Program Services Manager with monthly reports.  This position will  provide “back-up” and “crisis line” support to Crisis Line on a monthly basis.

EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Delivers comprehensive legal advocacy services (excluding legal advice or representation) including the provision of legal information, court accompaniment, assistance obtaining restraining orders, help in claiming crime victims compensation, and  referrals to assorted legal programs and community agencies in the community.
  • Provides direct services to the victims of abuse including the assessment of client needs through individual peer counseling and/or crisis intervention, advocacy and development of case management plans that address immediate and long term needs, and accompaniment/referrals to community agencies and resources.
  • Assists with the recruitment, training and retention of volunteers who work as advocates for victims of abuse.
  • Ensures casework records are kept maintained in compliance with grant goals and objectives and Lassen Family Services policies and procedures.
  • Compiles statistical information according to grant compliance standards.
  • Assists and supports the Direct Services Program Manager and Direct Services Program Supervisor with monthly reports and related assignments.
  • Provides “back-up” and “crisis line” support to Crisis Line on a monthly basis.
  • Provides restraining order and legal advocacy training to assigned staff.
  • Provides public education on issues related to abuse, legal advocacy and the services offered at Lassen Family Services.
  • Attends conferences and workshops related to abuse and legal advocacy, networks with other service providers and maintains positive relationships with community agencies.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

(these are typical, but Lassen Family Services will make reasonable accommodations for job candidates/incumbents with disabilities)

Sit for extended periods; frequently stand, walk and stoop, kneel and crouch to pick up and or move objects; normal manual dexterity and hand eye coordination; lift and move objects

weighing up to 25 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range, use of office equipment including computer, telephone, calculator, copier, fax and manual time clock.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed in a variety of environments including the Shelter, Lassen Family Services business office and other community organizations; requires frequent driving to different locations and sites throughout the service area; frequent contact and communication with other staff, the public, shelter residents and representatives of other agencies; work hours may be variable and outside the normal 8 am to 5pm workday to meet the requirements of the position; incumbents are expected to be available on stand-by for crisis intervention responses at any time during specifically assigned time periods.
