The Position:
The Public Defender plans, organizes, directs and participates in the legal counseling and representation of indigent persons accused of violations of criminal law. The duties of the Public Defender include, but are not limited to:

  • Oversee and participate in the investigation and preparation of legal defense in the cases in which the Public Defender has been appointed counsel.
  • Establish and apply policies and procedures related to the County’s public defense program; remain abreast of changes in statutory and decisional law and ensure conformance with same.
  • Select, assign, motivate and evaluate personnel; ensure staff participation in professional and County sponsored training programs.
  • Consult with subordinate legal staff on the conduct of cases in progress and provide advice and assistance as necessary; review case files and observe the performance of deputy public defenders in court.
  • Prepare trial briefs, review questions of law, and anticipate legal reasoning of prosecutors.
  • Appear in court and try cases, presenting evidence and conferring with the judge or prosecution regarding modification, withdrawal, or changing of charges; present opening statements, interrogate and cross-examine witnesses, argue points of law, and make final arguments or summations.
  • Confer and direct staff regarding file maintenance and workload data consistent with the requirements of a modern public law office.
  • Direct the preparation of the department budget; administer the approved budget, control expenditures, and coordinate financial and budget matters with the County Administrative Officer.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Graduation from an accredited law school, be an active member of the State Bar of California and have five years of experience in the practice of law, including two years of significant administrative/managerial experience. Per California Government Code Section 27701, must have been a practicing attorney in all of the courts of the State for at least the year preceding the date of appointment

The salary for this position is $92,004 to $111,324 and will be based on qualifications of the successful candidate. A negotiated 2% salary increase becomes effective the first full pay period following July 1, 2019.


  • PERS 2% at 62 Retirement Plan. County participates in Social Security.
  • Flexible Benefit 125 Plan: Additional County and employee dollars may be used tax free for medical, dental, vision, and deferred compensation.
  • The County provides a portion of health insurance for employees.
  • Term Life insurance coverage is provided by the County at $40,000.
  • Leave: 4 personal days (32 hours), 40 hours administrative leave, 15 days of vacation and 15 days sick leave per year.
  • Holidays: 13 days.
