Boating Safety Officer (Seasonal)

$18.15 hourly

5:00 p.m., July 20, 2018


Persons appointed to this position are Code Enforcement Officers pursuant to 829.5 of the California Penal Code. Boating Safety Code Enforcement Officers will serve seasonally (from May 1st. through December 31st. consistent with the legal fishing season at Eagle Lake). The major duties of this job include:

  • Enforces all County, State and Federal laws as they pertain to the marine environment.
  • Educate the public on the need to boat safely.
  • Operate patrol boats and patrol vehicles.
  • Direct boating traffic and enforce boating laws.
  • Install, maintain, and remove buoys as necessary on navigable waters.
  • Conduct investigations of boating and public accidents occurring on or near the water.
  • Patrol assigned bodies of water in Lassen County.
  • Administer first aid to injured victims.
  • Write detailed reports of all activities, and maintain departmental files and records.
  • Conduct preliminary investigations, interview witnesses, gather evidence and take statements in connection with suspected criminal activities.
  • Assist and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in investigations.
  • Maintain departmental equipment, and keep equipment in good working condition.


Although this is a non-peace officer assignment, candidates must meet the minimum standards to be a peace officer as defined in California Government code section 1031, including:

Be a US Citizen or permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.

  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Be fingerprinted for purposes of search of local, state, and national fingerprint files to disclose a criminal record.
  • Be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
  • Be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  • Be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
  • Physical condition shall be evaluated by a licensed physician and surgeon.

Must meet all hiring, continuing employment, and promotional requirements as defined in the Prison Rape Elimination Act. 28 CFR part 115.

Experience: Experience in law enforcement and/or security preferred.
Licenses and Certifications: Possess certification of California Penal Code 832 (A) course, Powers or Arrest/Citation. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.
