Janice Eileen Shearin Foster

March 13,1948-September 3,2021

Janice was born March 13, 1948 in Medford, Oregon to Dorothy Young Shearin and Thomas H. Shearin. Janice grew up in Eagle Point, Oregon until she and her family moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1956. From a young age she had an inquisitive mind, was academically motivated, and was a student who excelled in whatever she put her mind to. She played the piano beautifully, excelled in swimming, and participated in Christian youth activities and Girl Scouts. Her close relationship with Jesus in her childhood made her the thoughtful and caring person she was. Consequently, she was admired by all and a friend to everyone.

Janice and her family moved to Bakersfield, California in 1964. During high school, Janice met Robert Jeffrey Irvin (Jeff) and the two later married in 1968. Jeff was attending college in Fresno, California when they had their first child in 1971. When Jeff became employed by the US Forest Service, they lived in the Sequoia National Forest where Janice often cooked for fire crews and would spend time at lookout towers. They had their second child in 1975, transferred to the Plumas National Forest and moved their young family to Milford, California in 1976. Janice fell in love with the Honey Lake Valley and began to develop long lasting friendships. Jeff and Jan grew their family, raising 4 more children in Lassen County, which remained her home for the next 45 years.

Later in life, Janice transitioned to a career in the social service field. Janice was employed as a Family Service Worker for Sierra Cascade Head Start in August 1993-November 2007. She believed she could make a positive impact on the lives of young children and their families. She earned an Associates’ Degree in Liberal Arts from Lassen Community College while working full time. In 2007, using experience from Head Start (and from raising 6 children) she embarked on a new adventure as a social worker for Lassen County Child and Family Services. She remained a dedicated and hardworking social worker until August 2021, often being the one to travel long distances to check on clients. The impact she had on children, young adults and families, partner agencies, the court and attorneys, the group home personnel, her co-workers, medical providers, resource parents and adoptive parents are far reaching and immeasurable.  Jan went above and beyond for children and families and has left a legacy of care, compassion, love and countless instances of how she influenced the lives of children, perhaps for generations to come. It seems that Jan considered work more like her calling rather than an obligation.

Janice was remarried to Darrell Foster in 2006 who has 3 adult children. Janice (Jan to most, but always called Janice by Darrell) and Darrell spent nearly 15 years living in Lake Forest. Jan and Darrell had many adventures together, the most recent being a trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico in April 2021.  Jan and Darrell spent time visiting family near and far, going on camping and outdoor adventures together. Lake Tahoe was a favorite place to escape, and many wonderful memories were made there.

Jan was a very involved citizen, often volunteering much of her time in service to others. Friendships were developed through Janesville Christian Fellowship in early years after moving to Lassen County. She volunteered with MAMA Crisis Pregnancy Center and events to defend the unborn. Later, Jan and Darrell were active members at Community Church of Susanville. Jan helped serve with AWANA youth group activities and in childcare services on Sunday. She was committed to serving alongside Crossroads Ministries once a month providing delicious meals. Janice’s heart to protect women and children and assist those in need called for her to be involved in the Justice Task Force committee. She was a member of the Janesville School Site Council and served as a member on the Janesville Elementary School Board from December 1992-November 2004. Another role she enjoyed was serving as a member of the Lassen Youth Soccer Board. She looked for opportunities to share her time, energy, ideas to make a positive change in her community.

Jan is known as being a kind, empathetic, caring, thoughtful woman. She has provided a wealth of information and resources to her own family, community, church family, coworkers and her clients. She is an example of someone living their life in service to others and working many long hard hours. Janice took the time to listen to others and develop many friendships. Outside of work duties, Jan had many interests, including keeping a garden and fruit trees and nurturing plants. In earlier years she spent many hours sewing clothing and canning fruits and vegetables. She enjoyed God’s beautiful creation while camping, skiing, and hiking. She has been known to pull over on the side of the road to harvest berries or snip some wild growing flowers. She has spent many hours preparing delicious meals for family and friends, passing down family recipes, and was always ready to try new foods and recipes.

Janice’s earthly body died on September 3, 2021 at a hospital in Redding, California. She was preceded in death by her parents Dorothy and Thomas Shearin and her brother Robert Shearin. She leaves her husband Darrell Foster along with children: Jessica Irvin, Weldon Irvin, Anna (Jonathan) Aufderheide, Melanie Irvin, Wesley (Roxanna) Irvin, Tali Irvin, Jaime (RJ) Heijman, Christopher (Miriyam) Foster, Matthew (Amanda) Foster, 25 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, 2 sisters Rebecca Shearin, Jane (Dennis) Shearin Houseknecht, and brother Stephen Shearin, cousins, nieces and nephews. Jan was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Family and friends miss her deeply but have peace knowing she is eternally safe in the arms of her Saviour Jesus. She ran the race to hear her Father say “Well done, good and faithful servant”.

A memorial service for Janice will be held at Community Church of Susanville, Saturday, Oct, 9 at 2:00pm.

In honor and memory of Jan’s dedication to serving Lassen County children in need, a fund will be set up.
