In the midst of budget cuts and economic hard-times the Lassen High J.A.M. Council and some creative Lassen students have found a way to try to garner some much-needed money for local music.
The music supporters are shooting for a grant from the Glee “Give A Note” Foundation, a partnership between; the Fox network, home of the Glee television show; Ryan Murphy the show’s creator and the National Association for Music Education.
The foundation is awarding $1 million through an online contest to music programs in need throughout the nation. The awards come in the form of $50,000 prizes given to struggling schools.
In a video entry titled, “A Hope for Music!” Lassen High music student and J.A.M. Council President Jenny Hinkson relates that even while budget cuts have decimated important local school music programs Lassen High’s remains, although the school desperately needs funds for new music and equipment.
How can you help? Well this doesn’t require money to do a good thing, just a bit of your time and a few clicks of your computer mouse.
Lassen is competing with nearly 400 schools in what is essentially an online popularity contest. Once a day you can vote for Lassen at the Glee website and those votes add up quickly.
The contest rules say you can enter once a day from each computer or mobile device, so you can vote at home, at work and in the car! Voting ends November 7th so vote as many times as possible, and encourage family and friends to do so as well.
As Hinkson says in the entry video, “We might be a small community, but we have big potential.”
That potential is shown in the caliber of musicians that our area fosters through the Susanville Symphony, Youth Symphony and the school music program that remain.
