Gary Robert Felt – November 2021

Gary Robert Felt

Gary Felt was born August 11, 1951, in New York, New York to Robert and Helen Felt. His parents met and fell in love while his dad was serving in the 101st Airborne stationed in Edinburgh, Scotland.  They were married in Europe and his mother traveled to New York on the Queen Mary as a war bride at the end of WWII.  Gary is the middle child with four lovely sisters, Jeanette, Linda, Laura and Sandy.

The family moved from New York City to Long Island where Gary often spoke fondly of his life growing up on the island.  He joined the U.S. Navy upon graduating high school and showed an aptitude for engineering and joined the Navy Nuclear Submarine program.  Gary served 10 years in the U.S. Navy retiring as a Senior Chief Machinist’s Mate (E-8); he served in active duty for another 11 years.  Upon retiring from the Navy, he went to work for Electric Boat Corporation as a Manager of Human Resources and eventually relocated from the East Coast to Bremerton, WA.  After 25 years of service with Electric Boat, Gary took employment with the Kitsap Transit and in 2011 was offered to relocate to Susanville, CA to take a position as General Manager of Paratransit Services-Lassen.

Gary officially retired from all paying jobs in August 2013.  He met his wife, Susan, in March of 2014 and lived a beautiful and blessed life traveling, golfing, cocktails, spending time with their lovely daughters, Sarah and Molly (husbands Jordan and Daniel) and their beloved grandchildren, Penelope and Brooks.  Gary had a heart of service for his community, friends and family, and never tired of giving his time and efforts to all causes.  He served in various clubs and boards including Northeastern Rural Health Clinic, Susanville Sunrise Rotary, Lassen County Chamber of Commerce, Lassen College Foundation, Crime Stoppers, Kiwanis, Salvation Army, among others. He garnered the nickname of “Mr. Susanville” and found his way into many hearts with his kindness, volunteerism, fun and loving outlook on life.  He loved everyone with all his heart and lived his life to the fullest by enjoying every moment of it.

Gary is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Helen Felt. He is survived by his wife, Susan Felt, daughters Sarah McGrath (Jordan), Molly Bertotti (Daniel), beloved grandbabies Penelope and Brooks Bertotti, sisters Jeanette Babey (George), Linda Maletta Trosper (Nick), Laura Cardoso (Jerry), Sandra Iadanza (Tom), his In-laws Evelyn & Theodore Wolfram, his sisters-in-law Julie Younce (Dean) and Patricia Wolfram (Daniel).

If Tomorrow Starts Without Me

If tomorrow starts without me, and I’m not here to see,
If the sun should rise you find your eyes all filled with tears for me;
I wish so much you wouldn’t cry the way you did today,
While thinking of the many things we didn’t get to say.
I know how much you love me, as much as I love you
And each time that you think of me, I know you’ll miss me too.
But when tomorrow starts without me please try to understand,
That an angel came and called my name and took me by the hand.
He said my place was ready, in heaven far above
And that I’d have to leave behind all those I dearly love.
But as I turned and walked away a tear fell from my eye.
For all my life I’d always thought, I didn’t want to die.
I had so much to live for, so much left yet to do.
It seemed almost impossible that I was leaving you.
I thought of all the yesterdays the good ones and the bad.
I thought of all the love we shared, and all the fun we had.
If I could relive yesterday, just even for a while,
I’d say goodbye and kiss you and maybe see you smile.
But then I fully realized that this could never be,
For emptiness and memories would take the place of me.
When I thought of worldly things I might miss come tomorrow
I thought of you and when I did my heart was filled with sorrow.
When I walked through heavens gates I felt so much at home.
God looked down and smiled at me from his great golden throne
He said, “This is eternity and all I’ve promised you”
Today your life on earth has passed but here life starts anew.
I promise no tomorrow, but today will always last
And since each day is the same there’s no longing for the past.
You have been so faithful so trusting and so true.
Though there were times you did some things you knew you shouldn’t do.
You have been forgiven and now at last you’re free.
So won’t you come and take my hand and share my life with me?
So when tomorrow starts without me don’t think we’re far apart,
For every time you think of me, I’m right here in your heart.
