More than 350 people attended the Lassen High School Alumni Association’s 33rd annual Alumni Picnic on Saturday at the fairgrounds. Members of LHS classes from as far back as 1940 traveled from 9 different states to take part in the event.
In addition to the Alumni Picnic there were also several class reunions going on this weekend – the classes of 1957 and 1967 held their reunions at the Elks’ Lodge and the class of 1982 held theirs at Lassen Ale Works.
This year the alumni organization awarded several scholarships to Lassen students in the class of 2017. Nathan Egan and Erinn Zubillaga both were awarded $1,000 alumni scholarships. Emilee Downing received the $500 Jim Chapman Alumni of the Year scholarship. Hunter St. Andre was awarded $1,000 from the Ana and Otto Taylor Nursing Scholarship. The $1,000 Warren Chapman memorial scholarship was given to Carson Chavez and both the $500 David Mankins scholarshp and the $500 Terry Wood Memorial scholarship went to Courtney Jones.
2017 Graduate Erinn Zubillaga was recognized as the youngest alum at the barbecue, while Frances Cannon Parker was named the earliest LHS graduate in attendance, graduating in the class of 1940.
Traveling the furthest to attend was Karyn Alway Galetto from the class of 1960 who trekked all of the way from Baldwin, Maryland, to the Lassen County Fairgrounds.
2010 Alumni of the Year, Donna Morelini recognized 2017 LHS Alumni of the Year, Fred Borghi. Borghi, who recently retired after owning his own barbershop in uptown Susanville for more than 50 years, was unable to attend the event and close friend Lino Callegari accepted the award on his behalf. Borghi graduated in the Lassen High class of 1953.
