Forest Service Extending Most COVID-19 Closures Through June 11th

Lassen National Forest announced Wednesday that most developed recreation sites on the forest will remain closed through June 11th, 2020.

This decision excludes these sites on the Eagle Lake Ranger District: Aspen Grove (Campground), Aspen Grove Boat Launch (Boating Site), Christie (Campground), Christie Day Use (Picnic Site), Eagle (Campground), Gallatin Marina (Boating Site), Merrill (Campground), and Merrill Amphitheater (Interpretive Site/Day Use Site).

In addition, this order excludes these sites on the Almanor Ranger District: Canyon Dam Boat Launch (Boating Site), Canyon Dam Boat Launch (Day Use Site), Lake Almanor Trail Dyer View Trailhead (Day Use Site), and Black Rock (Campground).

The order does not close trails, trailheads, general forest areas and specific picnic areas and staging areas that function as trailheads for dispersed recreation; these areas remain accessible for public use. Dispersed camping is welcome as it meets the intent of social distancing.

This Forest Order was made in consultation with local county officials and congressional offices.

“By keeping the developed recreation sites, except those listed, closed through June 11th, 2020, it allows the Forest to provide the time necessary to reopen these sites in a safe manner,” said Lassen Forest Supervisor Deb Bumpus.

“It permits Forest personnel to prepare for the anticipated increases in visitation while minimizing risks that they bring to public health.”

“The value of nature to promote mental and physical health comes at a time when access is vital to the American public. We are working diligently to reopen the trails for full access and ask that visitors be patient during this transition period. Be prepared for other options if your trail is closed, and whenever possible, recreate locally.”

If you do plan on visiting the Lassen National Forest, please be aware that:
• No trash removal is currently offered – please pack out all trash and waste
• All toilet facilities are currently closed – please plan accordingly
• Avoid high-risk activities – law enforcement and search and rescue operations may be limited
• If an area is crowded, please search for a less occupied location

“The safety of our employees and the public will continue to be our number one priority as we closely monitor the situation and implement changes accordingly. We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our national forests safe and healthy for everyone’s use.”
