Fire Department Report: Hall Street Residential Flue Fire

The Susanville Fire Department has released details of the February, 5th flue fire on Hall Street that did heavy structural damage to the residence.

According to the department, first arriving engines reported smoke coming from the attic and upgraded the routine response to a full structure-fire response.

That response included Susanville fire volunteers, automatic and mutual aid from other county agencies. All told there were twelve fire apparatus and thirty firefighters on the ground battling the blaze.

The Fire Department reports that damage to the house consisted of, “heavy structural damage to the trusses in the attic and roof area and moderate to heavy ceiling damage to parts of the lower living area.” There was also smoke damage throughout the home.

An aggressive salvage operation by SFD Firefighters kept damage to the family’s personal belongings to a minimum.

According to the department’s report, “The fire was found to be caused by an ember being emitted from the flue pipe and landing on the dry untreated cedar shake roof. The flue pipe did not have a spark arrester.”

The Susanville Fire Department was assisted by: Susan River FPD, Standish FPD, Cal-Fire, Susanville Police Department, Lassen County Sheriff Dept., Susanville Water Department, Susanville Gas Department, LMUD and the Red Cross.
