Elvira Estela Harrison

Lassen County native and longtime Susanville resident Elvira Estela Harrison passed away on April 11, 2019 at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada.

Elvira and her twin brother, Oscar Garcia, were born on October 21, 1940 in Westwood, CA to Ascension and Josefina Garcia.  Elvira had six siblings, Oscar Garcia of Sparks, NV; Sue Garcia of Reno, NV; Helen Moreno of Carson City, NV; Ernie Garcia of Tualatin, OR; Andy Garcia of Red Bluff, CA; and Ophelia Garcia.  Ophelia preceded Elvira in death, passing away in June 1940 when she was a child.

Elvira went to elementary school and her first two years of high school in Westwood.  In 1957, Elvira and her family moved to Susanville where she attended Lassen High School and graduated with the class of 1959.  Elvira met her future husband, Ronald Harrison and they were married at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Susanville on September 4, 1960.

Ronald and Elvira had three children, Ronald Harrison Jr. of Walnut Creek, CA; John Harrison of Redding, CA and Suzanne Peery of Milford, CA.

Ronald and Elvira lived briefly in the Bay Area and then moved to Red Bluff where Elvira was a homemaker and raised her three children.  In 1970, Ronald and Elvira moved to Orland, CA after Ronald was hired as Game Warden with the California Department of Fish and Game.  Elvira worked as a Bilingual Teacher’s Aide for the Orland Elementary School District.  Elvira loved working as an aide and often considered going back to school to become a credentialed bilingual teacher.

In 1978, Ronald and Elvira returned to Susanville where they would live for the remainder of their lives.  Elvira worked for many years as a Teller at the Bank of America in Susanville.  In 1990, Elvira went to the California Correctional Center in Susanville where she worked as an Account Clerk II.  Elvira retired from the California Correctional Center in December 2002.

After her retirement, Elvira and her husband Ronald spent time traveling and visiting their children, grandchildren and family members.  Elvira became very involved with the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Susanville.  She was a member of the Susanville Elks Lodge serving as a past Chaplain and the Red Hat Society.  Elvira was also very active with Beta Sigma Phi sorority (Laureate Theta Psi) as a member for 57 years.

Elvira was a wonderful cook and she would always host large gatherings for her children and grandchildren at her home in Susanville during the holidays.  Elvira was a very kind and giving person and her family and friends loved her and will miss her greatly.

Elvira was preceded in death by her loving husband of fifty-eight years, Ronald Harrison, who passed away on September 5, 2018. Elvira is survived by her son Ronald Harrison Jr. and his children Sean, Emma, and Colin; son John Harrison and his wife Jennifer and their children Rileigh, Ryan, Caleb, and Johnny with his wife Sindy and their children John and Luke, and daughter Jennifer Harrison and her children Mason, Sydney, and Owen; daughter Suzanne Peery and her husband Rob and their children Tyler, Brandon, Nick, and Michael with his wife Jasmine and children Lilly, Ollie, and Edelweiss, daughter Scarlett with her husband Joel and children Caden and Chloe, and son Chris with his wife Chinee and daughter Katherine, and son Joshua with his wife Fatima.

Elvira is also survived by her siblings Oscar Garcia, Helen Moreno, Sue Garcia, Ernie Garcia, and Andy Garcia.  Elvira was preceded in death by her parents Ascension and Josefina Garcia and  sister Ophelia Garcia.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial which will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 120 North Union Street, Susanville, CA on Friday, April 26, 2019 at 11:00 am.  A Rosary Prayer Service will precede the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am.  Interment will follow at the Diamond Crest Cemetery, Diamond Crest Road, Johnstonville, CA.  Elvira will be buried in the Veteran’s section with her beloved husband Ronald.  An opportunity to gather and express condolences to the family and celebrate the life of Elvira Harrison will be held at Monsignor Moran Hall following the interment. Food and beverage will be generously provided by the Sacred Heart Caring and Sharing.  The family requests any donations be made in Elvira’s memory to Laureate Theta Psi c/o Barbara Tinston, 699-600 Oak Mountain Drive, Susanville, CA 96130.  A Scholarship will be given out her memory.
