Duane Thomas Headley

Duane Headley, 88, of Susanville, passed away peacefully at Banner Lassen Medical Center on Wednesday April 9, 2014 with his family by his side. Duane was born in Westwood, CA on January 8, 1926. He moved to Susanville in 1949 where he resided for sixty five years.

Duane enlisted in the U.S. Navy on April 11, 1944. He was discharged honorably on June 4, 1946. He held the rank of Fireman First Class on the USS Abatan. He took pride in wearing his World War II Veterans hat at the Veterans Day parades. In his younger years, he loved selling beer at the fair for the VFW’s

Duane was united in marriage to Bonnie Stewart on March 18, 1950. The newlyweds settled in Susanville. Duane worked for Lassen County Road Department for over 32 years and retired as the Road Superintendent. He loved his career and his fellow co-workers.

His favorite time of the day was gathering at Walkers Cafe drinking coffee and swapping stories with the boys at the head table. Several of his old friends and retired co-workers had a standing monthly luncheon wherein they would gather together and reminisce about the olden days.

Duane is survived by his two children Dawn Miller and Dirk Headley, both of Susanville, his grandsons Justin Miller of Chatsworth CA, Kenny Nave of Susanville, granddaughter Kayla Headley of Susanville, four great grandsons, one great granddaughter, and his beloved girlfriend Leta Jackson of Susanville. Duane also leaves behind several nieces and nephews.

Duane was preceded in death by his loving wife Bonnie Headley. His sisters Della Bosley and Doris Todd.

Duane’s memorial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19 at Walton’s Colonial Mortuary at 115 South Lassen Street in Susanville. Additionally, there will be a Military service at Diamond Crest Cemetery. Immediately following will be a reception at the Senior Center at 1700 Sunkist Drive in Susanville.
