Dr. Bateson, Susanville’s resident meteorological expert, checks in with some encouraging precipitation totals for the month December.
Bateson measured 4.54″ of moisture in December which is 123% of average for the month. This brings us to 9.69″ for the year to date or 108% of average.
“Unlike last year,” explains Bateson, “a lot of that was snow. Especially in the higher altitudes.”
According to Dr. Bateson the Sierras have 7 feet in some places around the Tahoe ski areas.
“Last year on the same date we had 12.09″ total for an average of 135% and thought we were doing well,” said Bateson. “Then we only had .03″ in January. Hopefully that won’t happen this year.”
