CHP: Low Visibility, Icy Roads and Unsafe Speed Trigger Single-Vehicle Rollover

The California Highway Patrol is releasing details of a single-vehicle rollover triggered by dense fog, ice on the roadway and unsafe speed in the area of US-395 and Laver Crossing on Saturday morning.

According to CHP Public Information Officer Shaun Simmons, the roadway, still frozen from the cold snap the week before, was covered with a layer of clear ice when 71-year old Sun Valley, Nevada, resident Robert Vieira was traveling northbound on US-395 at a speed unsafe for the icy conditions.

Vieira lost control and his 2008 Ford F350 spun out, crossing the southbound lane of 395 and leaving the west side of the roadway where it overturned in the ditch, coming to rest on its wheels in the field.

Vieira, who was trapped inside his vehicle until rescue personnel arrived, was transported by SEMSA ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno with moderate injuries.

The CHP reminds all motorists to reduce their speed when visibility is poor and when the roadway is wet or icy. It is your responsibility to drive at a safe speed for conditions regardless of the posted speed limit. Slow down for your safety and the safety of others.
