CHP Incident: Stolen Vehicle Chase Ends in South County Road Construction Site

In what sounds like a scene from an action movie, two men were arrested by CHP Officers last Tuesday after they led law enforcement on a chase through the areas surrounding Doyle in their stolen 1996 Subaru, finally coming to a stop when the driver circumnavigated a ‘Road Closed’ barrier and collided with a pair of Lassen County Road Department backhoes.

According to the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol, on May 9th, at around 8:30a.m., CHP Officer Clem was in the Milford area responding to a reported suspicious vehicle and located the Subaru, in the area of Gregory Lane.

A registration check revealed the vehicle had been stolen from Oroville and the CHP Officer continued to follow the car and its two occupants while waiting for other officers to arrive.

The Subaru traveled south on US-395 to the Doyle Loop. Once off the highway, and onto the side road, Officer Clem activated his overhead emergency lights and siren to initiate a high-risk traffic stop. The driver of the Subaru accelerated south on Doyle Loop and turned west on Doyle Grade.

From there the Subaru continued on Doyle Grade, failed to halt for a stop sign at US-395, and continued west on the grade. The driver then turned north on Laura Drive, drove around a ‘Road Closed’ sign and continued to flee from the officer, attempting unsuccessfully, to drive between two parked backhoes that were blocking the road at the construction site.

When the Subaru collided with the backhoes Officer Clem was able to take the passenger, identified as 29-year old Yreka resident Billy Hensher, into custody.

The driver, 23-year old Doyle resident Gregory Dodson, fled on foot and was taken into custody, without incident, a short time later.

There were no injuries as a result of the collision.

The Susanville CHP Office thanked the Lassen County Sheriff’s Office and the Lassen County Road Department for their involvement and assistance with the pursuit.
