A semi-truck hauling equipment leaked a hazardous substance for nearly a quarter of a mile along Highway 395 between Janesville and Milford Monday before stopping to attempt repairs.

According to details provided by the Susanville office of the California Highway Patrol the truck was traveling south on US-395, near the Honey Lake Rest Area, leaking an oil base substance.

A caller reporting the incident to the CHP said that the liquid was coating their windshield.

When the CHP officer arrived on-scene he found the vehicle stopped on the west shoulder of US-395, attempting to stop the leak.

The equipment being hauled had been used to crush vehicles, and the fluid was determined by the officer to be miscellaneous vehicle fluids from the crushing process.

After investigating further it was found that the containment system developed a leaking valve while traveling on the highway.

A second CHP officer responded to the scene and coordinated cleanup efforts. The material was cleaned up by the company responsible under supervision of CHP and Caltrans personnel.
